Statement
I have been creating visual art
since 1970 as a means of self-expression and self-discovery.
After receiving my BFA from the University of
Southern California and my teaching credential from Cal
State Los Angeles I spent eight years teaching art to students
from pre-school through high school in Los Angeles.
The disciplines
I choose are
painting,
photography
and
jewelry.
Through out my life I’ve had numerous opportunities to travel
the world and experience a variety of people, cultures and art forms.
This has brought me inspiration from the colorful dynamics and diversity existing
throughout the world. Personal life lessons and
celebrations also play a role in influencing my vision.
Since moving to the Monterey Peninsula in 1990 I have been
a featured artist in a number of local galleries, art spaces and
museums. Having been an on-going participant in the
Monterey Artist’s
Studio Tour
gave the opportunity for me to be selected as one of the cover
artists for the 2000, 2001 & 2005 feature articles in our local
paper.
PAINTING
: Visual Rhythms
These paintings are inspired from jazz,
salsa, world music, African and Latin percussion. Like tapestries
of visual rhythms the work reflects my experiences when
I listen to and play these styles of music.
The background of each painting acts as an atmosphere
which supports the geometric, rhythmic and lyrical patterns floating within the
two dimensional space. The
gestures and markings reference the rhythm, energy and
mood of the music. Patterns interweave and share an environment that is complex,
cooperative, and dynamic in much the same way individual
instruments create music collectively.
Various
themes will arise as subject matter. Some themes are slightly narrative,
like
Ocean Rhythms or
Raven Magic
but mostly the work is abstract, existing as pure energy like
Salsa
Ground Swell or
Gathering
Passion.
PHOTOGRAPHY
The
exploration of photography began in college where I experienced
the magic of the black and white process. The year 2000
marked a turning point where making images using
alternative photographic processes became exclusive. Since turning
toward non-darkroom techniques digital photography and image transfer
has been key in furthering my expressions.
Urban Views (current display)
The Digital process lends itself to
extreme color saturation and manipulation which makes rendering
urban landscapes and architecture notably interesting and exciting.
The original photograph is transformed into colorful textural compositions leaving the basic
foundation of the image intact. The images are shown in series
of 3 and 4. The color variations come with patience and
curiosity and reinforce specific themes, moods
and patterns. These repeating and correlating patterns flow through-out
the work. Whether they
are conceptual or visual
patterns I'm always drawn into the visual pulses and rhythms of
humanity and nature.
